Assistive Communication Technology
Communication devices help individuals with communication needs communicate, by supporting or replacing their speech. Computerized devices and specialized software include speech generating devices. Individuals with cerebral palsy have the option of selecting their modes of communication based on the severity of their oral motor impairment (Atchison & Diette, 2012) . Simple technologies such as communication boards and books for more complex technologies such as eye gaze communication keyboards are available. Below is a video on how technology can change life for the disabled.
The following is a list of additional augmentative communication devices:
- DynaVox: more sophisticated; tailored to accommodate the abilities of the individual ie. Eye gaze, head movement and/or keyboard use and many other devices. http://www.dynavoxtech.com/Default.aspx
